The Ivy to open its new Cardiff restaurant in November

The Ivy Collection will open its new restaurant in Cardiff in November.

The world famous restaurant group has been given a licence to open up at the former Jamie's Italian on The Hayes.

And The Ivy has revealed it intends to open the Cardiff restaurant in November.

The business hopes to extend the first floor of the restaurant above the Cath Kidston store next door, and also have an outside seating area, giving the venue a total of 244 covers and a bar area.

Troia Restaurants, the holding company for The Ivy Collection, is set to invest £4.3m in buying and refurbishing the empty unit, a council meeting has heard.

A Cardiff council committee granted The Ivy a licence to open in the former Jamie's Italian despite objections from South Wales Police.

The Ivy Collection will be able to open until 1.30am throughout the week - which is an hour later than Jamie's was allowed to.

Police argued the new restaurant would potentially have a "negative impact" on alcohol-related crime and disorder and public nuisance as the area is already "over-saturated" with drinking establishments.

But The Ivy said the majority of its customers would be consuming alcohol with food - and agreed to a condition to not let anyone in to just drink alcohol after midnight.

The Ivy had previously been given a licence to open in the former Moss Bros in The Hayes but instead opted to open at the former Jamie's site.

The restaurant group, which originated in London, now has 38 venues in England, Scotland and Ireland.

Stephen Walsh, barrister for The Ivy, told the committee meeting on Friday, October 11: "The whole point (of the new restaurants) is that it's supposed to mirror the quality of the original Ivy and aims to make it that level."

The Ivy has also applied to Cardiff council for planning permission to extend the unit and to make changes to the front - such as a new entrance and an outside seating area.

A consultation is being held on the application until Friday, October 18.
