The Ivy Glasgow accused of ignoring coronavirus safety rules and withholding tips from staff

One of the city's most prestigious restaurants has been accused of mistreating staff and ignoring government health and safety guidance in light of the coronavirus crisis.

A collective grievance has been submitted by staff at The Ivy who say that team morale is 'extremely low' due to their mistreatment.

It's been claimed that the company has breached health and safety guidance by forcing staff to attend face-to-face meetings, removing 1m distancing strips on the bar, failing to ensure booking sizes remain below the Scottish Government's maximum of eight people and not providing designated walkways for guests.

The workers have also said that their tips have been withheld or used to top up senior management salaries and that they aren't being allowed to carry their unused holidays over into next year.

They're calling for more transparency over where money from service changes and commissions go and are asking that management stop 'encouraging staff not to tell the truth' when asked by guests about the service charge.

A statement issued by the staff reads: "We as a collective, feel we have had minimal guidance throughout lockdown, with often conflicting messages from management and head office.

"We feel we have had minimum information regarding furlough pay, misguidance on holidays and have been put in a position of risk by the company. This has a detrimental effect on the staff's mental wellbeing.

"Further, the team morale is extremely low, frequent comments from managers attending to "if you are not happy with the holiday situation you can just leave" and "you are lucky to be in a job", are not conducive to improving mental wellbeing or team morale."

A meeting has been requested between management and Bryan Simpson of Unite Hospitality.

A spokesperson for The Ivy said: "

We do not comment on an individual or specific staff employment matters as a matter of Company policy.”
