The first trailer for Meryl Streep’s next film Ricki and the Flash has launched, giving us our first look at the star’s turn as a rock star.
Streep follows up her Oscar-nominated singing role in Into the Woods with another musical performance, as a musician who tries to make it up to the family she abandoned for stardom. The actor reportedly spent months learning the guitar in preparation for the role.
The film is directed by Oscar-winner Jonathan Demme, best known for The Silence of the Lambs and Rachel Getting Married, while the screenplay comes from Diablo Cody, best known for Juno and Young Adult.
Last summer, Cody spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Streep’s musical training. “The reason we haven’t shot the movie yet is Meryl’s been learning to play,” she said. “Watching her come along has been really inspiring. Everything you hear, the band has to play and Meryl has to play.”
Ricki and the Flash also stars Kevin Kline, Mamie Gummer and Sebastian Stan. Streep will be hoping for her record 20th nomination for her role in the film, but she’ll face competition from early favourites Jennifer Lawrence, for her role in comedy drama Joy, and Cate Blanchett, for romantic drama Carol.
Ricki and the Flash hits UK cinemas on 7 August.
