Legendary director Martin Scorsese returns to the crime genre once more with his epic new Netflix film The Irishman.
Reuniting him with his old Taxi Driver comrade Robert De Niro , Scorsese tackles the true story of Frank Sheeran, a World War Two veteran who works as a hustler and hitman alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century.
The film spans decades, chronicling one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history: the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa ( Al Pacino ).
The Irishman also offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.
The star-studded film also stars Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Jack Huston, and Kathrine Narducci.
None of this is unfamiliar territory for Scorsese, who has made a name for himself with gangster flicks such as Goodfellas , Casino, and The Departed, along with HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire.
The director's last feature film was religious epic Silence starring Andrew Garfiield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson.
He will next direct a mysterious biographical drama starring Meryl Streep and Sharon Stone, followed by a true-crime film on the Osage County murders in the 1920s entitled Killers of the Flower Moon, which will see him work together with DeNiro once more along with other frequent collaborator and The Wolf of Wall Street star Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Irishman is due to premiere at New York Film Festival on September 27, 2019, but will be released in cinemas and then on Netflix later this year.
