The Irishman: New trailer shows de-aged Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in Martin Scorsese film

A new trailer for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman offers a closer look at the films much talked-about de-aging VFX techniques.

The clip, which was released on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, shows Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (Robert De Niro) with Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) as they plot to assassinate union leader Jimmy Hoffa.

The movie is based on the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, and was written by Steven Zaillan.

It tells the story of Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, a mob hitman and World War II veteran who developed his deadly skills during service in Italy. In his old age, he reflects on the events that defined his life, particularly the role he played in the disappearance of his longtime friend, labour leader Jimmy Hoffa.

Along with Scorsese regulars De Niro, Pesci and Harvey Keitel, the film also stars Al Pacino, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham and Bobby Cannavale.

The American crime drama was picked up by Netflix after Paramount dropped out of the project, which is believed to be costing up to $200 million to produce – one of the most expensive of Scorsese's career.

The Irishman is scheduled for release in New York and Los Angeles on 1 November before being released across the US and UK on 8 November, before extending to additional territories the following week.

It will stream on Netflix on 27 November.
