The Irish town with the worst Covid rate outside Dublin where school closed and concern rife

Celbridge in Co Kildare currently has the worst Covid-19 incidence rate of any town outside Dublin.

The bustling area has a rate of 171.1 per 100,000 in the last two weeks with only Blanchardstown-Mulhaddart and Tallaght Central having a higher rate right now.

This data comes from the latest Government Covid data hub which has the incidence rate for every local area in the country.

Unlike the other areas with similar rates, Celbridge is of course not in level three like Dublin as the county of Kildare as a whole has seen a dip in their overall numbers.

But there is major concern in the town that cases are still on the rise.

A primary school in the area was advised to close by the HSE earlier this week due to a number of cases.

Scoil Na Mainistreach in Celbridge received the guidance on Thursday after the HSE carried out a number of tests.

It is thought originally just a few students had been sent home but after testing a further outbreak was feared.

In a letter to the school principal the HSE said: "Following today's risk assessment we recommend that the school would close while the investigation is ongoing.

"We will keep in regular contact with you as the results of further testing come through."

The Celbridge Barber Shop also asked pupils from Scoil Na Mainistreach to stay away after the cases.

However the shop insists that this is only a "temporary measure" while investigations take place.

Cllr Joe Neville welcomed the introduction of local figures as they really "hit home" admitting Celbridge is a concern.

The Fine Gael representative said on Twitter: "Kildare case location update: Covid cases in Kildare have decreased significantly relative to other counties & that is extremely positive. Big variance by location in Kildare though so let’s hope any spikes are stamped out quickly!"

He added: "Celbridge numbers are a concern alright so let’s hope it’s stamped out quickly. It is that very type of reason I have been crying out for local numbers as it really hits home when you see them."
