The Irish Open to return to Mount Juliet next year - report

The Irish Open Dubai Duty Free will return to Mount Juliet in Kilkenny next year, according to reports.

Spain's Jon Rahm will defend his title in Thomastown from May 28-31 with former host Rory McIlroy taking part once again, reports the Irish Indepedent.

It will be the fourth time the venue has hosted the tournament following memorable wins for Nick Faldo (1993), Bernhard Langer (1994) and Sam Torrance (1995).

Huge crowds then turned out to see a prime Tiger Woods win the WGC American Express Championship at the course in 2002 before Ernie Els won the title there in 2004.

It will be the first time the Irish Open has been played on a traditional parkland course since The K Club hosted it in 2016 when McIlroy won it for the first time.

McIlroy hosted the tournament for four consecutive years before passing on the gauntlet last year with Paul McGinely taking the reigns.

But it is unclear who will take over hosting duties at Mount Juliet with major champions Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell in the conversation.

It could be the case that McGinley is trusted with the job again with the Dubliner having a golf academy at the Kilkenny course.
