The Invisible Man is moving forward without Johnny Depp.
Universal is hoping that the actor, who was originally set to star, will be replaced by Elisabeth Moss. According to Variety, negotiations to sign the Handmaid's Tale star is in the early stages.
The film is being written and directed by Saw writer Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) with sources stressing that Depp will no longer be involved in the project.
It's unknown what route the film will go down, but the hiring of Whannell is Universal's first move to salvage the doomed Dark Universe, which was set to feature classic monsters including the Bride of Frankenstein.
The first film to be released as part of the shared universe plan was 2017's The Mummy, which was one of the year's biggest flops. It starred Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe.
Moss will next be seen in Jordan Peele's new horror film Us with roles in Her Smell, The Kitchen and the third season of Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale set to arrive this year.
