One for your diaries, and booking ahead may be a good idea: the Media Society is hosting an on-stage conversation with James Naughtie.
I would guess that the interviewer, Phil Harding, will concentrate on asking about Naughtie’s coverage of the US presidential election.
The former Today presenter is covering the event for BBC Radio 4, including his former Today berth.
Given that the event will take place on 5 July, just before the Republican convention, it could not be more timely. Harding, a former Today editor, will surely ask Naughtie about the role of the US media in the rise of Donald Trump’s rise.
Did his outrageous statements get too many headlines? Have American journalists subjected him to proper scrutiny? And could he end up as president?
And what about Hillary Clinton? Why has her candidacy been anything but wildly popular, even among Democrats?
A battle-hardened veteran of the last eight US elections, Naughtie says he has never seen anything quite like this one.
But he has enjoyed a long career, in print as well as broadcasting, so there will be plenty more to talk about. He has been on the front line of journalism for more than 30 years, spending 21 of them in the Today studio.
So we can expect questions about UK politics, about Scotland and the joy of not getting up at 3am three days a week.
Ah yes, and let’s not forget that famous Jeremy Hunt moment. And, for those with even longer memories, there was that tempestuous interview in 1989 when an exasperated Neil Kinnock told Naughtie: “I won’t be bloody kebabbed.”
The conversation will take place at the Goucho Club, 6.30 for 7pm start, on 5 July. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite.
