The inside track on why Tottenham have not signed a free agent after Kane and Son injuries

The lack of options up front is a constant bone of contention for the Tottenham fans.

Fernando Llorente left the club last summer at the end of his contract and he was not replaced, leaving Harry Kane as the only recognised first team striker on the books.

Kane picked up an injury on New Year's Day - the first day of the January transfer window - but a replacement was not signed, leaving Jose Mourinho with no recognised first team strikers.

Troy Parrott at just 18 years old is not trusted yet to lead the line, and after Son Heung-min suffered a broken arm, Spurs' options up front were hamstrung even further.

Jose Mourinho: I have no complaints about my players

Spurs looked bereft of ideas going forward during the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend - a result which puts them four points adrift of the Blues in the race for a Champions League place.

And Tottenham face a deficit in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 encounter with RB Leipzig too, having lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week, having also struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities.

What can Mourinho and Spurs do? The transfer window is closed, but free agents are fair game, with Spurs able to register new players who are not affiliated to another club already.

That is not something the club is actively looking at doing though, with little in the way of quality available, for obvious reasons.

Tottenham reporter Alasdair Gold explained why a free agent was not an option for the club during a Q&A with supporters this week.

He said: "There's a problem with free agents.

"Firstly if they’re still free agents a month after the transfer window closed then there’s probably a reason for that.

"Also by the time you’d get a free agent signing fit enough to play in the Premier League, Harry Kane or Son would likely be back.

"Spurs are not really a quick fix club.

"They just don’t operate in that way and although a free agent could be added to a Premier League club, you could not register them for the Champions League - a minor detail I know if Tottenham crash out next month in Germany.

"I get the impression that they will continue with Lucas [Moura], [Steven] Bergwijn, [Erik] Lamela and Dele Alli rotating during games in the most advanced role."
