The inside story on Luke Ayling's new Leeds United contract and how it came about

Luke Ayling says he knew his future would be at Leeds United after the club offered him a new deal with a year-and-a-half still to go on his current contract.

The defender signed a new four-year contract with the Whites last month following his impressive form under Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship .

The ex-Arsenal youth man arrived at Elland Road from Bristol City in 2016 and has weathered several managerial changes to emerge as a key member of United's promotion-pushing squad.

Speaking in the club's matchday programme ahead of their victory over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, Ayling admitted he was surprised to be offered a long-term contract while both injured and so far out from the end of his current deal.

"It was unreal they came to me at the time they did, because I was injured and still had 18 months left on my contract," the 28-year-old said.

"They didn't have a reason to come to me, but they thought I had played well enough in the last two years to earn a new deal.

"It only took a matter of days to get it sorted, I knew that my future was going to be here. I was buzzing to sign. To agree a long-term deal takes me into my early 30s, my family is really settled here and it was really nice.

"My little girl is two-and-a-half and she's only ever lived up here. I'm sure it will be home for us for many, many more years."
