How Michael Edwards raised £50m this summer and the shape of Liverpool's future

Liverpool may not have been particularly busy bringing in new faces during the summer transfer window.

But that doesn't mean the Reds and their sporting director Michael Edwards were quiet in the market. Far from it.

The arrivals of young prospects Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott were followed in early August by free goalkeeper agents Adrian and Andy Lonergan.

It was a stark contrast to the spend of more than £175million 12 months earlier that proved the catalyst for Liverpool's best-ever Premier League campaign and their Champions League success in Madrid.

The main business, though, has come the other way, with the Reds moving on a host of players, whether on a permanent basis or on loan, raising more than £50m in the process.

Liverpool's summer sales

Danny Ings (to Southampton) - £18m rising to £20m

Rafa Camacho (to Sporting Lisbon) - £5m rising to £7m and 25% sell-on

George Johnston (to Feyenoord) - £300,000 and 25% sell-on

Simon Mignolet (to Club Brugge) - £6.5m rising to £8m

Ovie Ejaria (to Reading) – season-long loan with agreement of £3m permanent deal rising to £3.5m and 20% sell-on

Bobby Duncan (to Fiorentina) - £1.8m and 20% sell-on

Ryan Kent (to Rangers) - £6.5m rising to £7.5m and 20% sell-on

Ings was agreed the previous year as part of the deal that saw him move on an initial season-long loan.

Mignolet was allowed to depart for what Liverpool deemed a good price as he wanted regular first-team football, while Ejaria and Kent were returning to clubs where they had successful loan spells last season.

Both Camacho and Johnston were entering the final year of their contract.

Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno also departed having reached the end of the deals at Anfield, joining Trabzonspor and Villarreal respectively. Adam Bogdan and Connor Randall were among other players released.

Liverpool's main loans

Marko Grujic (to Hertha Berlin) - £2m loan fee

Taiwo Awonyi (to Mainz) - £600,000 loan fee

Kamil Grabara (to Huddersfield)

Harry Wilson (to Bournemouth) - £2.5m loan fee

Sheyi Ojo (to Rangers)

Ben Woodburn (to Oxford)

Nat Phillips (to Stuttgart)

Liam Millar (to Kilmarnock)

Allan (to Fluminese)

Grujic returned to Hertha – turning down several other clubs in the process – to continue his progress at the Bundesliga side.

Awonyi's latest loan is regarded as a further step up for the Dutch striker, aided by the fact Mainz play with two forwards, while Grabara has similarly increased his level after a previous stint in Denmark with Aarhus.

Wilson's form already at Bournemouth has underlined why Liverpool regard the Cherries as a perfect fit to continue the player's development.

Ojo had a difficult time in France last year having switched to Reims on loan against the advice of the club, with the winger's move to Ibrox partly on the strength of the impressive work Rangers boss Steven Gerrard did with Kent last term.

Woodburn is expected to have much-needed regular game time at Oxford, and the offer of a move to Germany is regarded a great first loan opportunity for Phillips.

Millar encouraged on a previous loan spell with Kilmarnock last season, and is one of several loan moves – Woodburn and Grabara included – where the club pay the full wage and will face penalties if the player doesn't appear in a certain number of games.

And the decision to allow Allan to stay at Fluminese has prompted his call-up to the Brazil Olympic squad.
