The injury to Alun Wyn Jones' face after Jake Ball allegedly punched him

This is the black eye Alun Wyn Jones will be sporting when he leads Wales out against Ireland in the Six Nations today.

Jones has been spotted with a bruised face after an altercation with team-mate Jake Ball in training, which is believed to have happened on Wednesday. Reports claim Ball punched Jones.

He was pictured during training later in the week with bruising around his left eye and what appeared to be stitches or medical glue in his eyebrow.

Wales have played down the nature of the incident, with physical confrontations not totally uncommon in an intense training environment.

The incident happened on the same day Wales announced Josh Adams had been suspended for breaking Covid-19 regulations.

Jones will play for the first time since December after recovering from the knee injury he suffered against Italy in the Autumn Nations Cup.

"I had a good recovery and touch wood it has been pretty seamless in terms of its progression and the staged return," Jones said this week.

"I've been fortunate enough to get the nod for the game on Sunday. I have been a bit frustrated, really, because it was a similar period for me post-World Cup in 2019.

"This one (the knee injury) was just someone falling on me. It has been a bit more frustrating, but I am relishing the chance to get back into it properly."
