The Indian restaurant named the best in Wales

Wales has a new top Indian restaurant following the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards ceremony.

The new title holder of Best Regional Restaurant of the Year in Wales is the Sheesh Mahal in Llanelli.

Meanwhile, last year's winner - The Grand Sultan in Port Talbot - impressed judges in another category this time round, with chef Kabul Islam winning Regional Chef of the Year for Wales.

Open in Llanelli since 1991 the Sheesh Mahal serves authentic Indian cuisine and has previously won Welsh Curry Awards in 2008 and 2011 and Best Welsh Restaurant at the British Curry Awards (in 2015).

Their specials include golden lamb chops from the Tandoori oven and Captain's Pathila - tender strips of chicken or lamb in rich, tangy sauce.

Owner Monuhor Ali said: "It’s an incredible honour to be named as the Best Regional Restaurant of the Year in Wales at the Asian Restaurants & Takeaway Awards 2019.

"We thank our valued customers without whom this would not have been possible. Curry and Asian food have become such a huge part of British culture and to be recognised as the best in Wales is truly remarkable. We are inspired to carry our work and create more happy customers.”

Kabul at The Grand Sultan scooped the best chef in Wales prize after wowing judges with his Sea Bass Malabar in the cook-off.

Kabul has worked at The Grand Sultan for four years where the most popular dishes include lamb shank, Mangalore chicken and salmon bhaja.

Owner Abdur Rahman said: "To bring this award to our town of Port Talbot is very special. We are inspired to continue creating the best Asian cuisine for all our valued customers."

Entrants to Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards are found by surveying more than 350,000 across the UK before they are whittled down and then the winners are then selected by a panel of judges.

The main award of the night - National Champion of Champions - was taken home by Hot Chilli Restaurant in Bolton.
