The Independent Group applies to register as a new political party

The Independent Group of MPs which was set up by numerous defectors including Anna Soubry and Chris Leslie has applied to register as a new political party.

The move comes as to allow the group to take part in the European elections if they take place later this year - and the elections will come as condition of a further delay to Brexit.

Former Conservative MP for South Cambridgeshire, Heidi Allen, has been appointed as the interim leader until further formalities take place.

If the polls are held on May 23, the group will also adopt a new name and be known as Change UK - The Independent Group.

If Theresa May is defeated in the vote on her Withdrawal Agreement on Friday, March 29, the potential for an application on April 12 for an extension to the Brexit process would become much more likely.

A group must be registered as a political party with the European Commission in order to stand candidates in the polls.

Heidi Allen said: "Today marks a huge step forward on The Independent Group's journey to becoming a fully-fledged political party, so I am delighted to have been chosen as our interim leader.

"If we are to deliver on our ambition to change politics for the better, it is vital that we attract support from people from every walk of life, every political background and none.

"Coming into the House of Commons from running my manufacturing business in 2015, I have seen with my own eyes how improved our political system would be if it harnessed the diverse skills and experience of our country.

"We in Change UK, as we hope to be known, don't just dream about a fairer and better future for our country, we are determined to unleash it through hard work, passion and shared endeavour."

The Independent Group was formed by numerous defectors form both the Labour Party and the Conservatives.

Former Conservative Party member and MP for Broxtowe, Anna Soubry and former Labour member and MP for Nottingham East, Chris Leslie, resigned from their parties in February 2019.

Other founding members include Luciana Berger, Ann Coffey, Mike Gapes, Gavin Shuker, Angela Smith, Joan Ryan, Sarah Wollaston and Chuka Umunna.

Nominations for the European elections close on April 24.
