Coffee has been enjoying a bit of a boom in recent years, with speciality shops and roasters popping up across the country.
Luckily for the people of Cardiff, the city has an array of fantastic independent cafes and coffee shops where you can grab a fix of your favourite caffeinated beverage.
So if you're looking for a change from big chains like Starbucks, and fancy supporting local businesses, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Here are the places in Cardiff - in no particular order - that we think you should try if you love a good coffee.

Uncommon Ground
In the six years since its opening in 2015, Uncommon Ground has achieved a bit of a cult-like status among Cardiff's coffee lovers.
The shop, a cosy little hideaway tucked away in the Royal Arcade, is run by brothers Paul and Ian Hayman and features a menu of drinks made using Uncommon Ground's very own coffee, roasted locally in Cardiff.

Waterloo Tea

One of Cardiff's most successful local businesses, Waterloo Tea originally opened in Penylan in 2008 and now has four cafes across Cardiff and one in Penarth.
Although it takes its name from the extensive range of teas it focuses on, don't let that fool you into thinking that they're not equally as serious about their coffees. Waterloo Tea features a rotation of different coffee roasters, which means there's always something exciting in store.

Hard Lines
Another coffee shop with cult status, Hard Lines originally opened in Cardiff Market and has since added a second location in Canton.
Serving up its own coffee, roasted in house, you'd be hard pressed to find coffee as fresh as that of Hard Lines anywhere else.

Lufkin

Another cafe that takes its coffee roasting seriously, Lufkin opened back in 2015, taking inspiration from the rich coffee culture of California.
Lufkin has since expanded to Grangetown and Canton, with its roasters and workshop open to the public. In addition to that, it also features a range of ceramics you can buy in-store.

Corner Coffee
Another of Cardiff's incredible arcade coffee spots, Corner Coffee sits at the corner of High Street Arcade in the city centre.
First opening at this spot in 2017, it has since gone on to win over coffee fans across Cardiff with its range of different roasts and tasty food.

Rhostio

One of the newest names in Cardiff's coffee scene, Rhostio has made a splash since its doors opened back in June this year.
Featuring an in-house roastery and roof terrace, owners Tunahan Kirktepeli and Fatih Tosun have turned this old car dealership on Crwys Road into a coffee lovers' paradise.

The Plan
Beloved by its loyal customer base, The Plan is a unique gem somewhere between a cafe and an eatery.
Tucked away at the heart of the beautiful Morgan Arcade, you could while away the hours here munching on delicious cakes and enjoying a range of different coffee blends.

Stag Coffee

Popular with students and locals alike for its cosy atmosphere and delicious food and drink, Stag Coffee is another of Cardiff's true gems.
The cafe on Crwys Road uses Coal Town Coffee from Ammanford for all of its drinks, and the food menu regularly changes on a weekly basis according to ingredients.

Coffee Barker
Inspired by the cafe bars of New York and the grand cafes of Paris, Coffee Barker has reached massive heights since its original opening back in 2013 and with good reason.
With one of the chicest interiors of any coffee spot in Cardiff, right at the heart of the Castle Arcade, enjoying your Barker blend coffee here feels like quite the luxury.

Bigmoose

Bigmoose is a coffee shop with a slight difference, employing and training people who have experienced homelessness and other disadvantaged people, and offering an open door policy to anyone who needs it.
In addition to that, Bigmoose's signature coffee comes from Cardiff-based Manumit Coffee Roasters, whose coffee is roasted by men and women who have survived slavery and are rebuilding their lives.

Brodies
The smallest spot on our list and one of the smallest coffee shops in the city, Brodies originally opened out of its now-iconic cabin in Gorsedd Gardens by City Hall back in 2016.
It has since gone on to open its 'bricks n mortar' location on North Road, serving up its delicious array of cakes, pastries and its famous batch brew coffee.

La Belle Epoque

Sat right at the corner of Clifton Street and Broadway is La Belle Epoque, an elegant little cafe bar which specialises in coffee, wine and an array of patisserie.
Opened back in 2018 by Polish ex-pats Jakub and Lukas, this charming cafe is well worth the short walk from the city centre if you're after somewhere to relax with an award-winning brew from the duo's native Poland.

Kin+Ilk
Another favourite among coffee purists in Cardiff, Kin+Ilk has six locations across the city.
Kin+Ilk's coffee is sourced and directly traded by the cafe from a farm in El Salvador, who process the beans using honey.

Quantum Coffee Roasters
Opening in Cardiff Bay back in 2015, Quantum Coffee took much of its inspiration from the coffee culture of Greece, where owners Dimitris and Katia grew up.
There's a truly incredible range of roasts available from Quantum, all of which you can find at their coffee house on Bute Street.

Sibling

Opening earlier this year in a former brothel in Roath, Sibling is the joint venture of brother and sister duo Georgie and Will Thomas.
Not only has the building undergone an amazing transformation into the stunning space it is now, but it serves up a selection of speciality coffees from artisan roasters including Manumit and Triple Co Roast.
