The incredibly cruel 'NHS' email scam police want people in Edinburgh to be well aware of

An incredibly cruel email scam which asks people for NHS donations during the Covid-19 pandemic has been highlighted by police.

Officers want to make people aware of the heartless scam which aims to con people out of their hard-earned cash.

They say emails which appear to be from the Government and NHS have been doing the rounds asking people to help the health service with a charitable donation.

However rather than the cash going toward helping the fight against the global pandemic, its simply being pocketed by the cruel crooks behind the messages.

Police Scotland say: "Criminals will use any opportunity they can to defraud the public out of money, often impersonating professional and legitimate organisations.

"Don't allow yourself to be pressured into donating money, and never make donations by cash or gift card, or send money through transfer agents such as Western Union or Moneygram.

"Be sceptical if you receive an email, text or WhatsApp in relation to coronavirus and never click on any attachments or links."

They add that people should never provide personal data such as their name, address and date of birth.
