The incredible stat that is a good omen for Tottenham ahead of second leg vs Man City

Tottenham have the advantage in the battle between the English teams in the Champions League quarter-final.

A Son Heung-min strike late on at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium handed Spurs a one-goal advantage to take to the Etihad with them for the second leg next week.

Spurs were magnificent inside their new home in N17 - the first European night under the lights in the new stadium on the High Road -  and could have perhaps been taking an even greater lead to Manchester next Wednesday.

However, they will have to settle themselves with just one.

Harry Kane breaks his silence following ankle injury in Champions League victory over Man City

And that one could prove very important indeed, if past results are anything to go by.

That is because Tottenham have an incredible record in European knockout competition when winning the first leg.

According to Opta, Spurs have progressed to the next round on each of the last nine occasions they have won the first leg of a European knockout match.

So as far as history is concerned that solitary Son strike could be the difference between Spurs reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in the Champions League era and not.

Spurs beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in the first league of their Champions League last 16 clash prior to facing Manchester City, going on to win 4-0 on aggregate.

Their last first leg win before that was in the 2012/13 Europa League last 16, when they beat Inter Milan 3-0, before losing the second leg 4-1 after extra-time to go through on away goals. They had beaten Lyon 3-0 in the first leg of the previous round too.

There was also the famous 1-0 win over AC Milan in the San Siro in the last 16 of the 2010/11 Champions League.

The last time Spurs won a first leg knockout game and did not go through was in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup, beating Kaiserslautern 1-0 at home, before two late goals in the return leg gave the Germans victory.
