The incredible Premier League record to give Man City hope in title race finale with Liverpool FC

No Premier League team has been more dominant over a two-season period than Manchester City.

After breaking plenty of team and individual records in last season's 100-point campaign, City can almost match that points total if they beat Brighton in the final game of the season on Sunday.

Three points takes Pep Guardiola's side to a hugely impressive 98 points, which would be enough to retain the Premier League - something no team has managed for ten years.

And the 195 points accumulated since the start of last season has smashed the previous two-year record set by Chelsea in 2004/05 - 2005/06, which stood at 186.

City's current record stands comfortably above any other side, and they can go into the crucial final day decider knowing a second successive trophy would reward two years of hard work. They are the best side over the last two seasons, and three more points will reward that with more silverware.

But on the flip side, only Manchester United have retained the title since Chelsea's double success in 2005 and 2006, but their accumulated points between 2007/08 and 2008/09 (177) has been beaten five times by sides with just one title.

United themselves won 178 between 2011-12 and 2012-13, with Sergio Aguero denying them successive titles, while the Reds recorded 180 points between 1993-94 - 1994-95.

City's 100 points last season contributed to their 178 points in Pep Guardiola's first two seasons between 2016/17 and 2017/18, but the Spaniard fell short of winning the league in his first year.

But this season's title race has shown that comparisons to previous seasons are irrelevant when two quality teams are going up against each other, and this latest record will be no consolation to City and Guardiola if they are beaten to the title by Liverpool on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp's men - who could record an impressive 97 points this season - have won 169 points since the beginning of last season, 26 less than City. But they could still win the league on Sunday and would be deserved winners if they do based on this season alone.

However, if City can back up their dominance under Guardiola with a second title, they should arguably be considered the best team in the Premier League era.

Most points won in the Premier League over a two-season period:

  • Manchester City (2017-18/2018-19) - 195 points*
  • Chelsea (2004-05/2005-06) - 186
  • Manchester United (1993-94/1994-95) - 180
  • Manchester City (2016-17/2017-18) - 178
  • Manchester United (2011-12/2012-13) - 178
