The incredible moment former Rangers chief Craig Whyte was told club was going into administration

Former Rangers chief Craig Whyte was told the club was going into administration while on his way to assure the first-team squad it WASN'T going to happen, according to Gordon Smith.

The former Light Blues director of football has revealed the incredible moment the news was broken to Whyte in February 2012.

Smith says Whyte had just addressed a group of fringe Rangers players and told them they had nothing to fear, despite mounting rumours in the media.

He then intended to deliver the same message to the first-team stars but was sidetracked by a phone call that delivered the news the club was in fact going into administration.

Speaking to Open Goal , Smith recalled the events of a fateful day in the club's history.

He said: "When it happened, it was right out of the blue.

"There were two sets of players, the first team and all the other boys.

"He met the other players first and told them: 'There's talk of administration in the papers, but I don't think we'll be going into administration, we're going to deal with this'.

"On the way to meeting the first team players, he suddenly got a phone call and he was away for ages.

"I spoke to the chief operating officer, Ali Russell and said: 'We need to speak to the players and let them know what's happening'.

"He went to speak to him, came back and said: 'We're going into administration, it's happening right now.'"
