The incredible Lucas Moura statistic that sums up Tottenham's Champions League heroics

Lucas Moura was the hero of the hour for Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night against Ajax.

The Brazilian forward netted a hat-trick as Spurs pulled off a remarkable comeback at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, with all three goals coming in the second half of the Champions League semi-final second leg clash.

Spurs looked to be heading out of the competition when they found themselves 2-0 down on the night – and 3-0 down on aggregate at half time on Wednesday, thanks to first half goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech.

But Moura gave Spurs hope with his first goal nine minutes after the break, before adding a second just two minutes later to give Mauricio Pochettino’s side a chance of reaching the Champions League final for the first time.

That dream looked to be fading as the game went into injury time with Spurs still trailing on aggregate, but Moura popped up in the dying seconds to score his – and Tottenham’s third to send the visiting fans wild in Amsterdam.

Speeches, anger, tears and fireworks - The inside story of Spurs' amazing night in Amsterdam

But while his goals created intense drama on the night and sparked emotional scenes following the final whistle, an incredible statistic has since emerged about Moura’s heroics.

That is that his three goals against Ajax, all of which were scored with his left foot, were in fact his first three left-footed shots in the competition this season.

BBC presenter Dan Walker highlighted the statistic on Football Focus this afternoon, while he also mentioned it on Twitter, where it emerged via football stats analyst James Yorke, as can be seen below.
