The incredible Harry Potter location you can visit for free just outside Greater Manchester

It's one of the best-loved film series on the planet, but did you know that one of the most impressive Harry Potter scenes was filmed just up the road from Manchester?

It might not be the world of broomsticks and dragons, but there's a real jaw-dropping location you can visit for a day out, free of charge.

A pivotal scene in the seventh film - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part one - was filmed at Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales.

This dramatic limestone rock formation was where Harry and Hermione went when they first parted ways with Ron.

The pair were seen sitting on the huge rocks as they continued to unravel the clues left to them by Professor Dumbledore, with the rolling Yorkshire countryside behind them.

Malham Cove is a popular tourist attraction in its own right.

The cliff formation stands at roughly 230 feet in height, and is curved like an amphitheatre.

But while it's impressive to look at from ground height, it's the top of the structure that's the most dramatic.

Here the limestone has formed with deep cracks in between, almost like stepping stones.

Small trees have even started to grow in between the rocks.

There are several ways to get up to the top of Malham Cove - and it's worth it for the views.

You can walk from the pretty village of Malham straight to the Cove, where a long - but gentle - flight of steps takes you to the top.

If you're wanting to make more of a day of it, there are other natural wonders to take in within walking distance.

Gordale Scar is a hidden gorge with a crashing waterfall at the end of it.

Some walking routes involve scaling the waterfall itself but this is only recommended for experienced scramblers - there's a much easier way around that cuts out the tricky incline.

You'll follow the stream as it weaves through the gorge before emerging at the foot of the falls.

Also well worth a visit - and a short walk from Gordale Scar and Malham village - is Janet's Foss.

It's only a small waterfall, but it's nestled in a picturesque National Trust woodland.

The footpath can be rocky and uneven so watch your step.

If you live in the northern boroughs of Greater Manchester like Rochdale, Oldham or Bury, you can drive to Malham National Park Centre in around an hour.

There are maps and lots of information to pick up at the information centre when you arrive.
