The incredible 999/1 odds Leeds United overcame to defeat Manchester City

Ten-man Leeds United quite literally defied the odds during their dramatic last-gasp victory over champions elect Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite taking the lead against Pep Guardiola's side, the Whites found themselves up against it at half-time in the aftermath of captain Liam Cooper being shown a red card.

It was a decision which required VAR intervention and was promptly followed by an equaliser from Ferran Torres, who struck for the home side upon the restart.

Following that double set-back, bookies - and perhaps supporters watching on BT Sport - only saw one winner as City strove to extend their advantage on Manchester United to 17 points at the Premier League summit.

However, what they, or the bookies, failed to take into account was the fighting spirit shown by Leeds throughout their first campaign back in the big time.

Betting odds continually shift over the course of each game in response to exactly where money is being placed - as well as to the events that are unfolding.

Indeed, at one stage in-play against City, after Cooper's dismissal and that equaliser from Torres, the Whites were priced matched by Betfair Exchange at a staggering 999/1 to win 2-1.

Later in the piece, one punter backed them at 55/1 to do the unthinkable - and Leeds duly cashed in!

Stuart Dallas was the hero for Marcelo Bielsa as the Argentine manager's much-applauded methods resulted in a Premier League scalp of the highest magnitude.

Shortly before referee Andre Marriner issued Cooper with his marching orders, the Northern Irishman put Leeds in front - capping off a fine team and individual display as the clash headed into added-time.

Indeed, with each side seemingly having to settle for a share of the spoils, Dallas spotted and exploited a rare gap beyond John Stones to slot beneath Ederson and, undoubtedly, send Leeds supporters watching at home on their TV screens into raptures.
