The incident that could see one of Fiji's top players banned for Wales game

Fiji could be without one of their star-studded backs for next week's Pool D clash with Wales in Oita.

Blockbusting wing Josua Tuisova could well find himself in hot water with disciplinary chiefs after escaping sanction in the Pacific Islanders'  45-10 win over Georgia in Higashiosaka on Thursday.

In the latter stages of a cagey first period Tuisova, nicknamed 'The Bus', can consider himself fortunate not to have been carded after his swinging arm caught Alexander Todua on the head.

Kiwi referee Paul Williams decided it was a penalty only after consulting his TMO, but the Lyon wing might not escape punishment from the citing officer ahead of their clash with Pool D table-toppers Wales next Wednesday.

The incident in the 34th minute with Fiji holding on to a 7-0 lead has caused plenty of debate on social media and was a talking point in the ITV studio at half-time.

Looking at the incident former Ireland and Lions legend Brian O'Driscoll said: "The referee Paul Williams obviously consulted his TMO, and the TMO felt as though it didn't warrant any more than a penalty.

"What the referee is looking for is that a high shot hitting the neck or head?

"Yes is the answer to that. Is the degree of danger high or low?

"That's questionable. I would say personally it's not high, but probably mid-range and as a result I would have thought there's a bigger case to answer for than just a penalty."

But the ex-centre believed the incident didn't warrant a red card and was worthy of 10-minute period in the sin-bin.

"It's not a red card offence, we don't want to be sending players off for that," he added.

"But going on the letter of the law and the diktat of World Rugby, that probably warrants a yellow card because it is a forearm to someone's head.

"Tuisova knows it himself and he's pretty happy it's just a penalty."

Georgia coach Milton Haig also felt Tuisova was fortunate to escape punishment.

“I definitely think it was an important moment in terms of the first half. It looked clearly on the replay it was around the head, and he was the last defender,” he said.

“Would it have changed the match? Not sure. In the second half they got their tails up.”

BBC pundit and former Welsh international Jonathan Davies was among those questioning whether a citing was on the cards for Tuisova.

The add insult to injury for the Georgians, Tuisova, a 2016 Olympic gold medallist in Rio, ignited Fiji's second-half scoring spree with a 49th minute touchdown.

It helped the Pacific Islanders record their first win of the tournament and send a warning to Wales for next week's match.
