Where are The Inbetweeners now? A comeback is pending as creators strike deal

After more than a decade since the series ended and the last film was released, it appears The Inbetweeners is set to make a return.

The show’s creators, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, have struck a deal through their company Fudge Park Productions with Banijay UK that “paves the way for the return of the hit comedy title,” according to recent reports

While details are still few and far between, the revival is expected to involve the original cast: Joe Thomas (Simon), Simon Bird (Will), James Buckley (Jay), and Blake Harrison (Neil).

The format of the return is not confirmed; possibilities include a new TV series, a film, stage show, or a multi‑platform project.

Will there be a third Inbetweeners film?

In October 2025, it was reported that the show’s creators, Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, struck a deal with Banijay UK that “paves the way for the return” of The Inbetweeners.

The deal reportedly grants rights and options to bring the franchise back in various forms—film, TV, maybe even stage. But crucially, nothing specific has yet been locked in.

Since the news broke, speaking to The Sun on behalf of Quizlet, Thomas expressed his enthusiasm for the reboot, even if the details of how it might come together are still uncertain.

“I feel enormously close to all those people and, obviously, I love spending time with them,” he said of the chance to get back onto projects with his fellow cast members.

“If there was an opportunity to spend more time with them in any capacity, I’d love that... that’s pretty much all I can say.”

Here is what the cast are up to these days.

Who is in The Inbetweeners?

Simon Bird played Will MacKenzie

MacKenzie plays schoolboy Will as he navigated life, friendship and sexual experiences in the original run.

Last year, the actor portrayed David in Channel 4 comedy series Everyone Else Burns. The 41-year-old also played Adam Goodman – a similar part to Will MacKenzie – in Channel 4 show Friday Night Dinner.

From 2014 on, Bird shifted his focus to directing. He co-founded Guilty Party Pictures, a production company with comedian Jonny Sweet and directed films including Days of the Bagnold Summer, Ernestine and Kit as well as episodes of BBC’s Pls Like.

Joe Thomas played Simon Cooper

Will’s best friend was the love-sick, dramatic and often obnoxious Simon Cooper played by Joe Thomas.

Following the conclusion of the series in 2010, Thomas found success on TV once more when he was chosen to play Kingsley Owen in the Manchester University student drama Fresh Meat, which also starred Jack Whitehall, Charlotte Ritchie, Kimberley Nixon and Zawe Ashton.

In addition to Fresh Meat, Joe and Simon Bird reunited in the 2013 comedy series Chickens, which did not receive a second season renewal. He went on to star in TV series, including White Gold and the science fiction comedy We Are Not Alone, which came out in 2022.Thomas made a comeback to the big screen in 2018 with the comedy The Festival, in which his partner Hannah Tointon also starred.

In an interview with The Sun, Thomas acknowledged the challenges of adapting the characters' youthful delusions to an older age. He noted that as people grow older, their delusions tend to diminish, which could affect the comedic situations that defined the original series. Despite this, he expressed confidence in the creators' vision for the revival.

He previously said on the Always Be Comedy podcast: “We’re all still around, we’re all still in each other’s lives. We all still like each other. And if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it. I feel like we all still really like each other.”

Blake Harrison played Neil Sutherland

Neil Sutherland plays Blake Harrison (Dave Benett)

Harrison played the dopey Neil in the series who – despite his slow wit – was the first of the foursome to lose his virginity.

Following the end of the series in 2010, Harrison co-starred with Hugh Grant in drama A Very English Scandal and provided voiceovers for Bob the Builder's revival. In addition, he portrayed Greg Tullet in The Kindred, Travis Pickford in Agatha and the Truth of Murder, and Private Pike in the Dad's Army film.

He tried his hand at both Bake Off and Agatha Christie adaptations and is currently hosting the MMA Fan Show podcast. The podcast is hosted by "two overexcited lads having a blast" who aren't really qualified to host an MMA podcast because they haven't both been in a cage.

Harrison has previously expressed skepticism about a reunion, stating he thought it would “never happen.” However, with the recent announcement of a revival in 2026 featuring the original cast, Harrison's stance appears to have evolved.

James Buckley played Jay Cartwright

James Buckley plays the overconfident and somewhat delusional Jay in the show.

Buckley and co-star Thomas starred in the TV series White Gold after the show's success, and Buckley made a guest appearance in a 2020 Doctor Who episode.

He joined the Cameo app in March 2020 and has become a star performer – earning £10,000 a week for sending videos to fans.

Currently, though, the majority of his time is devoted to managing his two popular YouTube vlogs, At Home With the Buckleys and Completed It Mate, which are about gaming.

Most recently Buckley and his wife Clair announced they will be taking At Home With the Buckleys on an unfiltered tour around the UK, visiting 13 cities in spring 2026.

Emily Head played Carli D’Amato

Carli D’Amato, Simon’s love interest, was played by Emily Head.

Head has established herself on the London theatrical scene and gained a starring part in Emmerdale since the show’s end.

She then turned her attention to writing and, more recently, played the lead in her own psychological thriller, The System, which tells the story of a man who was killed at his own birthday party.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding Head's involvement in the upcoming The Inbetweeners revival scheduled for 2026.

Belinda Stewart-Wilson played Polly MacKenzie

And last but not least, Will’s ever-presentable mum was played by Belinda Stewart-Wilson

Prior to her participation in The Inbetweeners, she had several TV appearances, including roles in Primaeval, The IT Crowd, and a special cameo on an episode of Poirot. Following the premiere of The Inbetweeners films, she played Ciara Cass in several episodes of Casualty.

Stewart-Wilson’s ongoing acting career suggests she could be a potential addition to The Inbetweeners revival. However, until an official announcement is made, her participation remains uncertain.
