The important reason why the SS Great Britain will glow green today

Bristol's world-famous SS Great Britain will glow green today (December 11) in an eye-catching show of support for an important cause.

The ship, which was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, will be lit up to raise awareness of the NSPCC's 'Light for Every Childhood' Christmas campaign.

The charity's appeal aims to help make sure every child knows how and where to speak about abuse.

People can get involved with the initiative in a number of different ways including wearing sparkly accessories and baking to fundraise for the charity.

Public relations and marketing manager for SS Great Britain Dominic Rowe said: “We strive to inspire children to be the next generation of innovators.

“As such, we are proud to support the NSPCC’s ‘Light for Every Childhood’ campaign this Christmas by lighting up the ship and continuing to invest in the future.

Community fundraising manager for Bath, Somerset and Bristol Anna Keir said: “We are delighted that SS Great Britain have shown their support by lighting up green this Christmas.

“By supporting our campaign, we hope it shows the children of Bristol that there is always help and support available, should they ever need it.”

“We’d love to see people across Bristol and Somerset getting involved in our festive fundraiser, ‘Get Your Sparkle On’, which people can do at any time over the Christmas period, knowing that every sparkle, every sequin and every pound raised for the NSPCC helps protect children."

The charity says just £3 helps its Speak Out Stay Safe programme teach a primary school pupil how to recognise abuse and get help.

A donation of £90 will provide a special assembly to 30 primary school pupils, and £580 will help reach a whole school of children.
