The impact Real Madrid's isolation will have on Arsenal, Chelsea and fixture back-log

Coronavirus is continuing to have its effect on the footballing world.

Yesterday, the virus was declared as a 'pandemic' by the World Health Organisation, and it has had a massive effect on countries around the world.

One big piece of news has come from Spain where it was announced that one of the Real Madrid basketball players had been tested positive for the disease.

As the basketball team share the same communal areas at the Ciudad Real Madrid to the football team, the La Liga side have now been told to self-isolate for 14 days.

La Liga has also suspended their league activities for the at least two matchdays, following the lead from Italy who suspended Serie A.

Madrid are set to play Manchester City in the Champions League last 16 second leg on Tuesday, and while there remains no decision just yet, the fixture is in massive doubt.

It appears that a decision is not going to be made just yet from UEFA on when the matches will be played.

The governing body announced today that they will hold a meeting next Tuesday (March 17) to discuss the plans of the competition going forward.

The statement from UEFA, read: "In the light of the ongoing developments in the spread of COVID-19 across Europe and the changing analysis of the World Health Organisation, UEFA has today invited representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro, to attend meetings by videoconference on Tuesday 17 March to discuss European football’s response to the outbreak.

"Discussions will include all domestic and European competitions, including UEFA EURO 2020.

"Further communication will be made following those meetings."

If the Champions League is suspended, or the Manchester City match is postponed, then it is going to have a big knock-on effect to both Chelsea and Arsenal.

According to the Manchester Evening News, that is now very likely after UEFA sources told the paper that the tie is going to be delayed.

Both clubs have got rearranged Premier League matches to face the champions, after recent postponements.

The Gunners were set to play City on Wednesday, however that was postponed after Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had been tested positive for the virus.

Arsenal had played the Greek side in the Europa League, with the owner having met some of the players. However, none of the Arsenal players or staff have been tested positive since.

Meanwhile, Chelsea were scheduled to play City on March 21, however due to the Blues reaching the quarter-final of the FA Cup, that game is going to have to be rearranged.

Instead, Frank Lampard's said are set to take on Leicester City in the FA Cup on that weekend.

It means that there is going to be a backlog of fixtures for City, and indeed Arsenal and Chelsea, to have to organise.

There could be a logistical nightmare for clubs and fans to organise what might happen over the next couple of weeks.
