The impact injury time goals have had on Leeds United's place in the Championship table

Leeds United had a knack of scoring late, late goals last season as their pre-season fitness work under Marcelo Bielsa paid trumps.

Two of the highlights of the last campaign were the wins against Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers either side of Christmas when goals from Kemar Roofe helped Leeds claim five points from losing positions in injury time.

Over the course of the season Leeds were able to claim eight points thanks to their goals after the 90 minute-mark, but how does this season compare as we approach the quarter-mark of the season?

In the real world, Leeds headed into the current international break sitting in fifth place following Saturday's defeat at Millwall, but that would be a different story if injury time goals were struck from the record for all of the teams at the top of the Championship.

As you can see from the table below, Leeds would be sitting at the top of the pile, up four places, as they would benefit more than any of their promotion rivals.

Championship table without stoppage time goals

  Team Played W D L GD Pts
1. Leeds United (up four) 11 7 1 3 +9 22
2. West Brom (down one) 11 6 4 1 +8 22
3. Nottingham Forest (down one) 11 6 4 1 +6 22
4. Preston (down one) 11 6 3 2 +11 21
5. Fulham (up two) 11 6 3 2 +11 21
6. Swansea City (down two) 11 5 5 1 +7 20
7. Charlton Athletic (up three) 11 5 3 3 +3 18

While the table is still in a relatively early stage and incredibly right, it shows just how damaging the Derby County's 91st minute equaliser at Elland Road last month was, as that is the only injury time goal in a Leeds United match this term. Swansea's late Elland Road winner came in the 90th minute.

Fulham are another beneficiary in this alternative table that transfermarkt have been keeping an eye on, while Charlton are another winner.

Leeds will be hoping that their superior fitness levels will tell over the season and ensure that they can use injury time to their advantage when the Championship returns after the international break.
