Two men stand in front of a white sheet, wearing saggy white jumpsuits. Their faces are stark white, their eyes painted black. Their hands, in bright yellow Marigolds, demonstrate a series of children's party tricks, performed in wide-eyed silent wonder. And at the end of each one, the two men beam at the audience and announce: "An illusion!"
The Illusion Brothers, like Men in Coats last year, prove that mime shows can be entertaining. Their faux-naif magic displays are simple yet hilarious; the trouble is, they account for only about 20 minutes of an hour-long show. For the rest of the time, Tom Godwin and Dominic Burdess enact the story of two men who, in Kathy Burke's idiosyncratically bolshie narration, "defied the laws of gravity and smashed the walls of reason". We see them twiddling knobs on a space ship and cowering before their invisible leader. A lot of this is enjoyable, but long minutes pass in which nothing really changes or happens - and in a show that relies on visual display for effect, that emptiness is fatal. But there's no denying that the Illusion Brothers are on to something; all it would take is a little tightening up for their show to be a real hit.
