The iconic stone horse belonging to Edinburgh vet school is set for a major makeover

An historic stone horse belonging to Edinburgh vet school is set to undergo a major restoration.

The striking sculpture has belonged to The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies for almost 200 years after being commissioned by founder William Dick.

The plan was for it to sit atop their first purpose-built home in Clyde Street and, after being carefully carved by an A. Wallace, it was moved there in 1833.

It has been with the school ever since at various different locations, and has most recently been at the equine hospital at their Easter Bush campus in Midlothian.

However she is now in need of a serious makeover after years outside braving the often brutal Scottish weather.

The vet school say she is being given a new lease of life, adding: "Nature and time have taken their toll and this week specialists from Graciela Ainsworth have been on-site to begin the restoration work.

"The horse will be cleaned and repaired, then placed on a new plinth so that it can continue its long service at the school."

Prior to trotting out to the Easter Bush campus in 2003 the horse had sat at the school quad in Summerhall for 87 years.
