The iconic Bootle pub that's back up for sale with a hefty asking price

A landmark Bootle pub appears to be back up for sale despite being bought by new owners in 2016.

The Merton Inn was sold to JSM bar group in December 2016 after being owned by JD Wetherspoons since 2009.

The reason for it's current sale is listed on the License Trade Associates website as the existing owners "wish to concentrate on other business activities outside of the licensed trade industry."

Wetherspoons took over the pub in 2009, spending £600,000 on transforming the old Merton Hotel building into a family friendly pub.

The Merton Inn changed hands after Wetherspoons decided to sell off 45 pubs across the country for ‘commercial reasons.’

The Merton was originally a semi-detached Victorian villa. In the 1930’s the houses were knocked through and extended becoming the Merton Hotel.

During the war it was also said to have been converted into a clinic for American service personnel.

Now, it appears after less than five years in charge, The Merton Pub is back up for sale and is currently under offer.

The sale is being handled by BA Commercial Chartered Surveyors based in Chester with the listing appearing on sites like Zoopla and Primelocation.com.

The sellers are inviting offers of £1 million for the freehold and long leasehold interests of the building, and according to the BA Commercial website, an offer for the purchase of the pub is currently being considered.

However, for that money you do get a lot of pub.

The total building area comprises of 14,693sq ft of space with a substantial beer garden to the front and car parking at the side of the building.

As well as the pub trading area, the building comes with basement storage, staff rooms, kitchens and a manager's office.

On the second floor level there are disused former letting accommodation which could be turned into bed and breakfast rooms subject to planning permission.

The property sale includes a 50 space car park which is operated on a pay and display basis from which the tenant collects the income.
