The Iceland shoplifter who would make prison staff 'gasp in horror' if she was jailed

A serial thief has avoided custody after a court heard prison staff would "gasp with horror" if she returned.

Wheelchair-using Sarah Campbell was told she'd had "every type of order the court could impose" to curb her thieving.

But she was at it again, being pushed into Iceland before stuffing food up her coat while on a suspended sentence.

A judge slammed her "dreadful" record - but claimed it wasn't in the interest of justice to jail her yet again.

And her solicitor claims the alcoholic and former drug addict is, aged just 38, suffering from "terminal" health problems.

"She's been told she must stop drinking - but she can't," claimed Michael Crowe, adding Campbell was battling cirrhosis.

Offending since she was just 14, North Tyneside Magistrates' Court she's been in an out of prison.

How are offenders sentenced?

And she added to her criminal record by targeting the Wallsend branch of Iceland during a four-day spree last November.

She stuffed as much as £108 of food up her clothes while a drug addict she met after falling in with "the wrong crowd" pushed her in her wheelchair.

She was in the wheelchair, Wednesday's sentencing heard, after an attack last year in which she suffered horror injuries - including a shattered knee.

She was snared by CCTV, with staff recognising her and pleaded guilty to three counts of shop theft.

When interviewed, Campbell claimed she was struggling on £9.50-a-week, adding: "I'm very sorry - I just don't have any money."

However the court heard Campbell receives "high-level" benefits - although she claims she's often "preyed upon" by associates who exploit her condition for cash.

"Unfortunately the drug and alcohol misuse had taken its toll on her wellbeing," added Mr Crowe.

"It is fair to say that certainly in recent times that Miss Campbell has taken a dramatic turn for the worse."

And he said that should she be jailed, it would only be for a few weeks - but the logistics of accommodating her would pose "potential difficulties" for prison staff.

"If Miss Campbell was to arrive at Low Newton they would gasp with horror," he added.

And District Judge Kate Meek handed her another suspended sentence after hearing her offending had "improved".

"You have had the benefit of every type of order the court could impose and you've had terms of imprisonment," she said.

"But I don't consider it in the interest of justice [to jail Campbell]."

Campbell, of Willow Grove, Wallsend, had her 12-week jail term suspended for a year.

However after Judge Meek said she would be jailed if she has "hoodwinked" the court and re-offends, Campbell said: "I guarantee I will not commit another offence."
