The Ianis Hagi transfer questions Rangers must answer as £5m deal leaves rival fans flummoxed - Hotline

Football might be on ice right now but the transfer speculation is starting to hot up with talk Rangers are going to splash out big bucks to make Ianis Hagi a permanent fixture at Ibrox.

The deal would go down a storm around Govan – but rivals are wondering where the cash is coming from.

Mick Docherty, Kirkintilloch, said: “ Rangers have not broke even in eight years, their chairman said in November they needed £10m to see out season, and that was before the pandemic struck.

“They’ll need to pay deferred wages down the line and we are now hearing there are planning a £5mill deal for Hagi.

“Is it not time for the governing bodies to be asking questions?”

Jack Scott, Falkirk, said: “How can Rangers talk about splashing out £5m on Hagi when they showed how skint they are by only offering their fans a measly £25 in store voucher as a refund for missing out on their five remaining home games.

“Even Livingston are giving the Govan team a showing up by offering a cash refund that could cost them up to £62k.”

Celtic are celebrating nine in a row but their rivals are telling Hoops fans to keep the noise down.

John Robertson, South Queensferry, said: “I have seen some good Celtic teams and the squad over the last nine years is not one of them. It’s not even close.

“This run is purely down to Rangers liquidation, thanks to David Murray, Craig Whyte.

“Fortunately a rookie manager seems to be on the right path and things will change soon as it won’t take much to pass Celtic.

“The times they are a changing. Don’t worry Neil Lennon they will give you the job running the pools, just as they did to Jock Stein.”

John Bruce, Bishopbriggs , said: “It’s quite entertaining to watch programmes that show compilations of games and goals that won teams their league titles.

“I wonder what will be included in those programmes in the future to show what defined how Celtic came by this season’s league title – a screenshot of an email, or a rousing speech from a Zoom conference call?”

Allan Docherty emailed: “I’m surprised Chris Sutton’s best ever Celtic XI didn’t read, Sutton, Sutton,  Sutton, Sutton... Here is the real best Celtic XI for nine-in-a-row: MacLennan, Doncaster, Petrie, Mulraney, Regan, Whyte, Collum...”.

Lee Griffiths, North Wales , said: “Seeing as Celtic were awarded the league by the SFA because they were favourites to win it, maybe they should be awarded the Scottish Cup as well as they were favourites to win that as well.

“Why don’t we just cancel playing on the field and just play in Hampden’s boardroom and forget about the games that have gone down in folklore when the underdogs have come out on top.”

Meanwhile, Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “The only chance Rangers have of challenging Celtic is by sacking Gerrard and getting Tommy Wright.

“Gerrard has spent millions and seriously hasn’t made a difference. Wright, with absolutely no money to strengthen, has done an amazing job with St Johnstone over the years.

“Gerard may have been a great player but as a manager he is a novice. Wright is tactically brilliant and a proven manager. He would give Celtic a fright.”

The SPFL is still in chaos, of course, and Hearts are hoping for reconstruction to save them from the drop.

But Kenny Goff emailed: “If the proposal from Hearts is 14-10-16 how can Cove Rangers be in bottom league when they won their title? That would be a lot worse than hearts being relegated, totally unfair and unjust. This is all to save Hearts.”

James Forsyth, Bellshill, said: “I have sympathy for Hearts but the league was called and the positions honoured. If it’s reconstruction then there should be a league of 18 to help other Championship clubs and not just for one season, but at least five.”

Mike Callaghan emailed: “Sky TV could save Hearts by insisting they want four Edinburgh Derbies on Sky Sports. They are the second biggest Derby in Scotland and generate crowds of 20,000 each game.”

Fair point, but it could be a while before we see those crowds again.
