The Ianis Hagi Rangers transfer advice that sealed Ibrox move as father praises 'great players'

Gheorghe Hagi has revealed he advised his son to stay at Rangers to play alongside "great players".

Ianis Hagi spent the second half of last season on loan from Gent, with the Ibrox club taking up their option to buy this summer.

The Romanian international had other options, but his famous father urged him to continue his development under Steven Gerrard.

Hagi Sr said: "A player will only become a big star if he has good team-mates next to him.

"I got all the credit for Romania's performance in the World Cup in 1994, but the truth is I was only able to play so well because I had so many players of huge quality next to me.

"They all worked extremely hard for me to get me the ball at every opportunity. We all created an incredible team spirit.

"So when Ianis was looking for advice about his next career move, that was what I told him.

"You are playing with a strong team at Rangers, who have some great players. You will play better if you stick with them."

Gheorghe Hagi is considered the greatest Romanian player of all time, and was dubbed 'The Maradona of the Carpathians'.

He starred for the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Galatasaray during his playing career.
