Newcastle Racecourse will be running at reduced capacity today, but with thousands of racegoers expected and a strong showing from hundreds of registered owners, the region's first significant race day since the imposition of the coronavirus pandemic will see the city shining, newly appointed Newcastle Jockey Club CEO Duane Dowell said.

The million-dollar race, The Hunter (1300m), returns to Broadmeadow today after debuting in 2019.

Mr Dowell, who took the reins at the club a fortnight ago, said he was expecting around 4000 racegoers trackside today despite running at reduced capacity and with strict distancing rules in place.

"When you see the the scenes of the race course, it'll look amazing," he said, "It's been a long wait - probably six or seven months or longer - for people to come out ... and everyone's really excited to showcase Newcastle and The Hunter race across Australia and the world."

Patrons will be required to QR-code check-in on arrival today, and must show a certificate of double-vaccination on entry, Mr Dowell said. There will also be a two-square-metre distancing requirement.

"Most people on track will have a designated seat for the day, and a reserved table, which lends itself to people really enjoying the day," he said.
