The Hull business saying 'b*gger to Brexit' as it expands across Europe

A Hull business has said “b*gger to Brexit” as it announces it is expanding its operations into Europe.

The Leather Repair Company, headquartered in Argyle Street, said it plans to open new offices in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Russia, and urged other businesses to seize opportunities which arise.

Company managing director Richard Hutchins said he was “fed up with the doom and gloom” surrounding Brexit, and was pushing ahead with the expansion of the leather repair firm.

He said: “Come out. Stay in. We’re expanding come what may.

“Too many businesses are focusing on what may or may not happen. They should be focusing on their business instead.

“My advice to businesses? Make the best of the situation and carry on.”

The Leather Repair Company has offices throughout the UK and offers a leather repair service for everything from leather jackets and trousers to leather sofas and car interiors.

The Hull-based business opened a new office in Belgium earlier this year, and is now planning to dramatically increase its presence across Europe.

Looking even further afield, The Leather Repair Company also has big plans to expand to the US, and has set its sights on an office in Florida.

“We’re really careful about who we award franchises to,” Mr Hutchins said.

“Franchisees must be full of character, trustworthy, have a sense of humour and be able to get on with people. They’re going into peoples’ homes, so they need to be personable.

When asked whether the company’s expansion plans for Europe had thrown up any challenges, Mr Hutchins replied: “Not at all.”

“Language hasn’t been an issue. I speak French and a smattering of German,” he said.

“The staff in our Brussels office speak English. Our only challenge is keeping up with all the work.

“These days, people are keen to repair and restore rather than throw away. And that’s good for business.”

Franchisees must follow a rigorous training programme before becoming qualified as technicians.

There are currently 19 people going through the programme in Belgium, with attendees from across Europe.

“We want to provide training for local people and create jobs in the area,” Mr Hutchins said.

Continued uncertainty surrounding the UK’s exit from the European Union has hit business sectors hard.

However, The Leather Repair Company has adopted a “b*gger Brexit” approach, and is progressing full steam ahead with its expansion plans.
