The huge Ryan Kent release clause Rangers could command if Steven Gerrard's talisman signs new contract

Rangers could insert a release clause worth up to £40m for Ryan Kent if he signs a new contract at Ibrox, according to pundit Danny Mills.

The former Liverpool wide man is enjoying the best season of his career under so far and is finally beginning to deliver on his £7m transfer fee.

Six goals and seven assists have helped Rangers to the top of the Scottish Premiership and to within a win of the Europa League knockout stages.

Kent's current contract runs until 2023 but there have already been reports that a new deal could be on the cards as Rangers look to fend off the circling vultures. Premier League side Leeds are chief among those interested.

But Mills reckons he won't be coming cheap - especially if Steven Gerrard can convince him to sign improved terms.

According to the pundit, a new release clause of up to £40m could be included in any new contract.

“Their value will definitely be going up because of their performances in the Europa League," he said via Football Insider.

“Ryan Kent’s release clause previously was £20m and he has a fantastic season. Do they have the right to say ‘hold on, he’s now worth £30m or £40m?'

“There will be lots of negotiations going round with how the deal works and what their valuation is now.

“He’s young, he’s enthusiastic and he’s under a very good manager in Steven Gerrard and I think his team is excellent too.

“Gary McAllister has been there, done it. That works really well.

“Michael Beale who was at Chelsea and came from Liverpool is exceptionally talented and does a lot of the coaching.

“Steven Gerrard has very cleverly put together a team of very, very good experienced coaches in and around him.”
