The house built the same year as King Charles I beheaded for treason

There are so few homes coming to market at the moment . . . then you get this 370-year-old pile of Ayrshire history.

It is called ‘The Place’ and what an amazing place it is.

This crow-stepped mansion was built by the powerful Cunninghame family.

But seized by the equally powerful Montgomery family after a blazing feud.

Savills have just taken it to market, but rather than a seizure, they are seeking  offers over £550,000.

The agents have pieced together a splendid history for their schedule, noting: “Above the original entrance can be seen an empty armorial niche.

“One could speculate this originally  held the coat of arms of the Cunningham’s.

“And chipped away when the Montgomerys took over.”

The Place sits on the edge of Kilmaurs and has about three acres.

Lady Sophia Montgomerie, daughter of the 14th Earl of Eglinton, was the last titled owner and handed over the surrounding land for the village to create a park (called Morton Park)  after WW1.

To the west of the property are the remains of an earlier tower house and the stone vaulted room remains intact.

This is known as the Chancellor’s Room and what an atmospheric place to enjoy a dram.

It was built  more than half a century before the creation of Great Britain.

The year it was built King Charles I was beheaded for treason.

There are all the lovely features you would anticipate from a stone staircase, beams and a magnificent original stone fireplace as the centrepiece of the lounge.

The kitchen is more modern, 2012 JS Geddes of Kilmarnock, with underfloor heating.

There are five historic bedrooms, so plenty of space for a big family.

The Place is surrounded by Morton Park and the Carmel Water.

Savills add: “The grounds are a credit to the current owners and at the front of the property (south facing) the grounds include a field/paddock and mature lawned gardens with a wide variety of shrubs and trees with fence and walled surround.”

Savills, 0141 248 7342, o/o £550,000.
