The homegrown core in Man City academy going for FA Youth Cup glory vs Liverpool FC

Manchester City may dream of a team of Mancunians coming through their academy but make no secret of their ambition to recruit the best young players from all over the globe.

As academy director Jason Wilcox said last season: "The influx of players and money means clubs are able to buy the best players from all over the world.

"We've got the best player in Argentina, the best player from Spain, the best goalkeeper, the best full back - we're looking worldwide and getting the best player in that position at that moment in time."

A look at their FA Youth Cup team reflects that, with the Under-18s ready to take on Liverpool in the final on Thursday ready to be captained by former Barcelona defender Eric Garcia and bolstered in attack by a recent purchase from Ipswich Town in Ben Knight.

However, despite the influences from elsewhere there remains a distinctly Mancunian and City feel to the latest class of young players trying to force their way into first-team contention.

Midfielder Tommy Doyle has not one but two famous club connections as the grandson of both Glyn Pardoe and Mike Doyle, goalkeeper Louie Moulden, son of ex-striker Paul, has also been a mainstay in the team and D'Margio Wright Phillips, son of Shaun, has also been progressing under Gareth Taylor and the coaching staff.

Felix Nmecha and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru also have older siblings, Lukas and Tom respectively, under contract at the club with the pair making their senior debuts last season.

To say City now have one of the leading academies in world football, a significant group of their Under-18s have played together for almost half of their lives.

Doyle, Wright-Phillips, Nathanael Ogbeta, Lewis Fiorini, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Rowan McDonald all hail from Greater Manchester and joined the club in primary school; Jeremie Frimpong (Under-10s), Nmecha and Dele-Bashiru (both Under-9s) were all snapped up shortly after moving to Manchester and have been here ever since.

City will continue to scour continents for the best young talent, but it is to the credit of the local recruits, the scouts who spotted their talent many years ago and the coaches that have helped their development that there is still a significant Manchester feel to the club's academy sides.
