Netflix has added a “terrifying” film that users are branding one of the best horrors of the year.
Users of the streaming service noticed the addition of an independent Irish film from director Lee Cronin that was released in cinemas earlier this year.
TitledThe Hole in the Ground, the film stars Seána Kerslake as the mother of a young boy (James Quinn Markey), who disappears in the woods behind their rural home. When he returns, she starts questioning his identity as his behaviour grows increasingly disturbing.
James Cosmo, who can currently be seen in BBC series His Dark Materials, also stars.
“Watched The Hole In The Ground on Netflix and what a supremely unsettling movie that was, brimming with an atmosphere that gets right under the skin,” one user wrote.
Another called it “one of scariest horror films of 2019,” praising “its freakish audio and chilling visuals”.
One viewer tweeted that the film was “terrifying” and compared it to Jennifer Kent’s Australian chiller The Babadook (2014).
Earlier this year, The Independent called it “a psychological horror film that leaves you wanting to come up for air.”
In the US, the film is distributed by A24, the studio behind horror hits The Witch, It Comes at Night, Hereditary and Midsommar.
