The hits written by Ed Sheeran for other artists - and the song he wishes he'd kept

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is best for topping the charts with tracks including Perfect, Shape of You and Lego House but many fans aren't aware that he's also penned some of their favourite songs by other artists.

His set on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage in 2017, which is being replayed as part of the BBC's 50th anniversary coverage, saw him widely praised but did you know other acts have made the most of his songwriting skills?

You might be listening to him more than you realised as he's written a host of songs for other stars including One Direction and Robbie Williams, reports the Mirror.

Ed Sheeran (PA)

Some he's written by himself, others were penned alongside the artist. Here are a few of them:

Anne-Marie - 2002

Ed teamed up with the pop singer to pen her catchy hit 2002.

The tune, which is full of nostalgic references, was in the chart for 40 weeks, peaking at Number 3.

One Direction - Little Things

Ed worked with the 1D boys on several tracks but this is probably the most well known and it made it to number one in the official chart.

Justin Bieber - Love Yourself

According to Billboard, the song was written for superstar singer Rihanna, but Ed never got around to playing it for her.

Instead it went to Justin Bieber, who co-wrote the rest of it. It was a number one and stayed in the charts for an incredible 64 weeks.

Liam Payne - Strip That Down

Ed co-wrote the former One Direction star's debut solo album. He also sings on the record but his voice was taken down several keys in a bid to keep his identity a secret (which didn't last long...).

The tune got to number three in the chart.

Robbie Williams - Pretty Woman

Robbie said he pretty much begged Ed to write a song for him. Back in 2016 he told the Sun : "[I thought,] days are running out for the album, 'Have I got enough hits? Are there enough hits? I've got Ed Sheeran's email. I'll send him an email and see what happens. One last hope'.

"[I wrote,] 'Dear Ed, Robbie Williams here. Do you have any spare hits?' And he sent me this song Pretty Woman. I added a chorus and I think the song is fully formed."

Matt Terry - When Christmas Comes Around

This was the X Factor winner's single back in 2016.

The song made him the second winner of the talent show to release an original track as their first single. It reached number three.

Olly Murs (South Wales Evening Post)

Olly Murs - Love Shine Down

Olly teamed up with Ed for this 2010 track. They were joined by Jason Pebworth, George Astasio, Jon Shave, and Dan Smith to write it.

The Weeknd - Dark Times

Ed wrote and featured on the Weeknd track.

Jessie Ware – Say You Love Me

This track was written by Jessie, Ed, Benny Blanco and Ben Ash. It reached number 22 in 2016.

But there's one song that Ed wishes he kept for himself.

Speaking to New York radio station Fresh 102.7, he said: "The one on Tori Kelly's album, I Was Made For Loving You.

"I remember writing that with Tori and saying before, '"Whatever we write, definitely for your album, don't worry about it', and remember halfway through being like 'Aghhh, God I wish I was keeping this'.

"It is a really beautiful song and it's turned out so, so well. But that's one song that I wish I'd kept."
