The hilarious tweets that will have you nostalgic for school in Scotland

A recent nostalgic Twitter thread sparked by a tweet about Scottish school jotters has sent us down a bit of a rabbit hole.

A post on the social media site by Scottish user @Kelty_87 joked about the fact that Scottish school kids used to have to cover their notebooks in wallpaper.

She wrote: "Right, google has just informed me that only Scottish weans covered their school jotters in wallpaper.

"I cannae get aer this. I thought everywan done this."

Though many people pitched in to say it wasn't just Scotland that did it, it got us thinking about all of the things we used to be made to do in Scottish schools.

Thankfully, Twitter was on hand to remind us of some right belters.

Playing sports was far more dangerous...

The double joy of a red ash pitch and a Mouldmaster football (Twitter)

Only Scots of a certain age will remember the joy of being forced to play football in any weather on a pitch made up of tiny wee red stones that were sharper than glass, with a ball that would have been softer if it had been replaced with a brick.

But that was the joint tortures of red ash/blaes pitches and Mitre Mouldmaster balls.

Slide tackles, falls, and getting hit in the bare leg with the aforementioned ball were just some of the joys we faced on a regular basis.

Covering our jotters with wallpaper/posters/wrapping paper

This one was always a pain - either getting into trouble for forgetting to do it, or worse having people rip into you for your family's terrible wallpaper choice.

We are pretty sure it was to protect those precious jotters and not just so teachers could have a nosey at your home decor.

Scottish country dancing for PE

You've got to hand it to the Scottish education system, they definitely knew how to prepare us for a life of choreographed dancing, awkward social interaction with the opposite sex, and the delightful melees that are ceilidhs.

Having to wear these at PE...

The shoes with many names (gutties/plimsoles/10p sannyboppers delete where appropriate) were a requirement for all gym sessions at Scottish primary schools. No one really knows why.

The TV on Wheels being a mixed blessing

The old TV and VHS on wheels combo either meant the teacher wanted a moment's peace and you were getting to watch reruns of Dotaman and Supergran or you were going to be shown something "educational" (and usually harrowing) like in the Tweet above.
