The highest recorded temperatures around Wales on one of the hottest days of the year so far

Temperatures rose to nearly 26°C on Sunday in what was one of the hottest days of the year so far.

While Sunday didn't quite top the heat we saw earlier this month scores of people flocked out to enjoy the sunshine across Wales' beaches and parks.

As well as crowds relaxing on the sand car parks filled up early in the morning before drivers were eventually turned away in places like Barry Island. Pembrokeshire council also tweeted to say their car parks were reaching capacity and urging people to "be patient and considerate to others and park appropriately". According to Met Office meteorologist Martin Bowles while there were expectations that Sunday would beat the 26.8°C that Wales saw on June 2 that wasn't quite the case. But that didn't stop the mercury rising to 25.9°C in Trawsgoed in Ceredigion which was officially Wales' hottest place on Sunday.

Lots of other places also fared well including Cardiff which saw 25.3°C in Bute Park on Sunday afternoon and Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny which also saw temperatures of nearly 26°C. In fact most parts of Wales got to at least 20°C.

Here were some of the other hottest areas of Wales on Sunday afternoon:

  • Swansea 22°
  • Wrexham 25°
  • Aberystwyth 20°
  • Carmarthen 23°
  • Holyhead 17°
  • Caernarfon 20°
  • St David's 20°
  • Newtown (Powys) 24°

Despite this weekend's glorious blue skies unfortunately the weather is not set to stay heading into next week. According to Mr Bowles Wales will get colder in the next few days before a chance of some better weather on Wednesday.

Even this could be fleeting, however, as a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms comes into force at 5am on Wednesday. People can expect to be woken up by loud rumbles of thunder as some lightning is predicted to hit the west Wales coast.

The weather warning, which will last until 11am that same morning, covers a small part of the country, with most of the west coast affected as well as Swansea.

The weather warning also stretches down the west English coast covering areas such as Cornwall and Plymouth.
