The hidden motorway lane which some drivers don't know about

Knowing this one - but very important - fact could increase the capacity of the UK's motorway network by around a third.

Because seemingly some drivers are completely unaware this "secret" third lane exists on motorways like the M5 and M4 near Bristol, choosing instead to remain in the middle lane almost exclusively.

To the left of the middle and right hand lanes of the motorway there is a third lane which drivers are allowed to use.

It is not exclusively reserved for lorry drivers and caravan towers, according to reporter at our sister paper Leicestershire Live.

But don't just believe Isaac Ashe? He has also consulted the Highway Code and it turns out it's true.

Clause 137 and 138 states: "A dual carriageway is a road which has a central reservation to separate the carriageways.

"On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

"On a three-lane dual carriageway, you may use the middle lane or the right-hand lane to overtake but return to the middle and then the left-hand lane when it is safe."

So there you have it.
