The Hero Pup is about a tiny puppy called Patch and a fatherless boy called Joe. Joe's father worked in the army. When Joe found out that his father was dead, he was heartbroken and did not wish to speak to anyone, not even his own mother! One day their neighbour's dog had a litter of puppies and one of them started to train to be a guide dog. Could Patch become a real guide dog and be trained by Joe? Would this pup change Joe's life by giving him someone else to love when he is missing his Dad?
I enjoyed reading the book because it was intriguing and I learnt a lot about guide dogs. The story had many different emotions throughout, from sad, to happy, and from gloomy to sensational. My favourite character was Joe's nosy neighbour Mr. Humphreys who was always popping up at the most unlikely times. The funniest part was when Patch tried to attack his toy snake because he thought it was real. He waived it around his head and whined when it dropped on the floor. Another highlight was when Joe threw Patch a snowball, which he caught in his mouth and looked very confused when it collapsed into nothing.
I recommend the book if you are interested in both people and animals alike, and I am definitely going to look out for more books by this author.
