The heartbreaking reason why Nile Rodgers and CHIC can't stay away from Liverpool revealed during Haydock show

Until around three years ago members of the younger generation may not have been familiar with the work of music producer and disco legends Nile Rodgers and CHIC .

But a storming Glastonbury set and a sold-out arena show later and they're loved by music-lovers of all ages.

Recent years have seen the rebirth of Nile Rodgers and the band he formed with long-time collaborator - the late Bernard Edwards.

And his work with Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams on Get Lucky means he has attracted a whole new audience.

Last night at Haydock, in between hits such as Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out and Sister Sledge's Thinking of You, Nile addressed the crowds to explain why the band started touring again and why they won't be stopping anytime soon.

He said: "A few years ago I was told I had an aggressive form of cancer. So I thought to myself what did I want to do with the time I had left.

"That answer was to tour and bring the party to everyone - like tonight - so that's what we did and are doing. I wanted to spend the rest of my life touring.

"I have now been told that I am now officially cancer free."

Nile's vow explains why he just can't keep away from Liverpool.

Next month he'll be returning to Liverpool to perform at Sefton Park during LIMF, marking the band's third appearance in Merseyside in recent years.

And last night's show proved why fans can't get enough of them as they put on a show that appeals to all ages.

It was impossible to stand still as hits including Madonna's Like a Virgin and Daft Punk's Get Lucky played out across Haydock Racecourse.

Along with the never-ending back catalogue of hits, this multi-Grammy-winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist knows how to win over an audience.

Despite so much acclaim surrounding the disco-soul band, you could still see the surprise on race-goer's faces as they questioned "was he really behind this song too?"

Even those who vow they never dance, couldn't stop moving last night.

I can't wait for their Sefton Park show now - every Saturday night should be spent partying with CHIC.
