The 'harsh' red card in pulsating Welsh Cup clash that's divided opinion and got fans and top pundits talking

A rugby player's red card for elbowing the face of an opponent has got rugby fans talking about whether it was the right call.

Merthyr RFC secured a narrow 20-18 victory over Pontypool in the WRU National Cup semi-final on Saturday, despite having wing Teri-Morgan Gee sent off in the first half.

The Ironmen now head to the final against Cardiff RFC on April 28 at the Principality Stadium.

It was an absorbing and keenly contested cup contest, but the decision by referee Mike English to send off Gee became the big talking point.

Merthyr were leading 14-11 moments before the break when Gee was red-carded for making elbow contact to the face of opposite number Lloyd Lewis.

You can watch the incident below

Informing Gee of his decision after conferring with the TMO, the referee tells the Merthyr man: "In the collision, you have made direct contact to the head of the Pontypool player at force with your elbow.

"It is a red card. We have no option."

Pontypool fans can be heard cheering the decision in the footage, with BBC Scrum V showing the match on Saturday.

Commentator Richie Rees, however, said in the immediate aftermath: "You can see the disbelief in Terri Gee's face. It may be a little, little harsh."

Jonathan Davies was one of a number of viewers to have a say on the wider issue, arguing "if you go in bad technique it’s your fault".
