The harsh lessons Frank Lampard has learnt ahead of Chelsea's UEFA Super Cup game with Liverpool

Frank Lampard says he is "desperate" to win the UEFA Super Cup with Chelsea as the Blues prepare to face Liverpool in Istanbul tonight (Wednesday).

The Blues face the Champions League winners in Turkey as they take part in the showpiece Super Cup clash for a fourth time, with Chelsea only winning once before.

Lampard was not part of the Chelsea team that won in 1999, but has been involved in the Blues' last two Super Cup matches, when they lost 4-1 to Atletico Madrid in 2012 and when they lost on penalties against Bayern Munich in 2013.

Back then, Lampard was a player, but as he prepares to lead the Blues against Liverpool as the club's head coach, he says he knows how important the game is for Chelsea.

“[When we played Atletico Madrid] We came off the back of a Champions League win where we were the underdogs, we celebrated, we enjoyed it, and went away and came back, and I don’t think we realised – and you can say this with age, and with hindsight – exactly what we were coming into," he said, speaking to BT Sport programme Sport in Focus.

“But as the team that won the Champions League, we felt like the big boys, and we got absolutely shocked, and stunned, and they deservedly sent us home with that defeat.

“The Bayern Munich game was different, completely different. We gave a good performance and it could have been a different outcome, but they scored in the last few moments, and we lost on penalties.

“That’s two great examples of an important game that we didn’t win, in two very different ways, and it makes me more determined to win it."

But he says he has learned from those experiences, with Lampard vowing that Chelsea will not be going into the game against Liverpool underestimating the occasion, or the importance of the game.

“The first thing we will do is not have this hindsight of saying we got shocked by anybody, because that will be my fault if that is the case," Lampard said.

“We have to be ready, we have had a good pre-season and this is a cup that the club desperately wants to win.

“I have never won it, a lot of the players in there have never won it, and we have to be mentally prepared, but it is something we are desperate to win."
