Alasdair Gold

The Harry Kane Chelsea links reality and Tottenham's Marc Guehi, Maddison and Zaniolo interest

Jjqq: "Matt Doherty did not play a minute at Rangers. Who do you think Spurs will use at right wing-back as starter and back-up?"

Alasdair says: "I did feel sorry for Doherty as the only outfield Spurs player not to get a minute of action at Rangers on Saturday. Perhaps Antonio Conte was simply having another look at Emerson and Lucas in the role before deciding what happens next in the role. Doherty has mostly played on the left during pre-season and his versatility could weigh in his favour.

"In terms of who will be starter and back-up, Conte's plan is that no position has a guaranteed starter and that all the players will compete and that rotation will happen for every competition with the increased quality of the squad.

"For me, Djed Spence is the least experienced but he ticks every box for a Conte wing-back and speaking to those inside the club, he was signed for that exact reason and would likely not have been a target signed for previous managers. It will be interesting to see how the competition in the role shakes out in the weeks ahead. Whoever plays there on Saturday against Roma you would assume will start the season there against Southampton."

mattyice13112: "Any news on Nicolo Zaniolo or James Maddison? Who would you prefer of the two?"

Alasdair says: "Both are very talented and both are players Spurs have had a long-held interest in. Maddison, 25, had a terrific season last time out with 18 goals and 12 assists and he's homegrown, while 23-year-old Zaniolo came back from two serious cruciate injuries to play 42 times last season for Roma, with eight goals and nine assists.

"Spurs' focus right now is on getting players out of the door but they are still looking at opportunities for attacking midfielders and strikers, as well as another centre-back depending on who departs.

"The club shot down the Maddison links during the Korea tour but I can't help that feel if there is a movement around the player from other sides and the chance to prise him away arises they might just make a move. With Zaniolo, Conte and Paratici will know him well and if Spurs are convinced that those injury woes are behind him then he's a very creative player if they believe he can step into the Premier League's physicality without problems. Both players' versatility will also appeal to Conte as they can play out wide on the right if required.

"My personal preference is perhaps Maddison, purely because he had such a terrific season last time out and helps the homegrown numbers angle, but both are excellent players."

ShaqAddo: "Is there any possible way that the players left at home for the tour could work their way back into favour or are they completely done at the club?"

Alasdair says: "You can never say the door is completely shut but to be left behind during an entire pre-season suggests Conte just doesn't see them in his plans for next season. That all but Winks are foreign players when Spurs need to get those numbers down for European competition and to sign any more foreign players suggests there's no way back."

Jjqq: "Any update on Skippy or Ben Davies?"

Alasdair says: "Oliver Skipp's injury was just a minor knock to his foot in training on Friday. He could be back for the match against Roma and if not then he's expected to be pushing to be involved against Southampton. For Ben Davies, Conte hopes he'll be ready for that Premier League opener although could prove to be slightly optimistic. The key is how the Welshman's ankle reacts in the week ahead."

Okan5858: "Will we still do transfers?"

Alasdair says: "Players need to head out of the door in the weeks ahead and Conte told me out in Korea that the club will continue to look for further opportunities to improve the squad."

allancho04: "Has there been any link to Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace? I think he can fit us well and fits the home grown quota."

Alasdair says: "Spurs absolutely love him and I reported earlier in the summer that the 22-year-old was one of the names on their centre-back wish list. Guehi plays mainly on the left of central defence where Tottenham now have Davies and Lenglet, although the latter can play in the centre if required. I just wonder whether the price that Palace would ask for the England international, who has a deal until 2026, would prove to be prohibitive and whether they'd even allow him to leave this year.

"Spurs will look for another centre-back if Rodon and/or Tanganga depart in the weeks ahead but I wonder if Guehi would may be one for next summer when I'm sure a number of teams will look at him after the World Cup."

vicsuna: "Will Ivan Perisic start vs Southampton?"

Alasdair says: "Much depends on his fitness. He's been out since suffering his calf injury on the last day of the Serie A season. He looked sharp in his half hour at the weekend in Glasgow and now the next two weeks are about upping his fitness.

"Perisic and Sessegnon are going to be used in tandem this season with all the competitions ahead. If Perisic can get to the required levels then he stands a chance of starting against Southampton because he's a real Conte favourite, but I just wonder whether Sessegnon will get the nod for that game as the Croatian is given a little more time to hit the peak fitness for one of the most demanding roles in the team."

EashN17: "Do the Kane to Chelsea rumours have truth in them?"

Alasdair says: "I reported back in May that not only was Kane settled and enjoying life under Conte but that if the club showed ambition this summer then he would be happy to discuss a new contract, with just two years left on his current one. That ambition has been displayed this summer in keeping Conte and signing six new players and Kane is understood to be open to talks, but at this point amid their busy summer Spurs have not yet approached Kane's camp with an offer of a new deal.

"The player and Tottenham's renewed happiness mean an offer is expected to eventually arrive and he is front and centre with Son Heung-min in everything they are doing as a club. Conte made it very clear that Kane is a very important part of his project at Spurs as he has about Son.

"I saw the Bayern links which didn't really make any sense for a player who very publicly stated that he does not want to play abroad. As for Chelsea, of course they'd love him but can you seriously see Spurs ever selling Harry Kane to their local rivals and especially a team they will feel they can really compete with this season amid the rebuilding going on there?"

pricey1: "Is it true that Spurs will only begin to pay for Reguilon this window? So any incoming transfer fee for him wouldn't really go in the pot so to speak."

Alasdair says: "That's was I was told, that this was the summer the Spaniard's fee had to be paid to Real Madrid, or at least started to be paid back. So yes in a way they are looking to sell him to offset that and I get the impression Conte just doesn't see him as fitting his wing-back mould. It's also the La Liga club's last summer to buy him back at an agreed price of around £42m, which looks highly unlikely."

jonnyspuruk: "Do you think Djed Spence will actually get much playing time this year?"

Alasdair says: "Yes, I think he's going to end up playing quite a lot. He fits Conte's wing-back mould perfectly. Now he just needs the experience and the Italian's tutelage."
