The Handmaid's Tale sequel The Testaments will be adapted for TV

Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale sequel The Testaments will be adapted for TV by Hulu and MGM Television.

The team behind the critically acclaimed adaptation of Atwood’s dystopian novel confirmed that showrunner Bruce Miller is involved in discussions about how to bring the new book to the small screen.

It is not yet clear whether The Testaments will be developed as a separate TV series or whether the events of the book will feature in the existing Handmaid’s Tale series.

The new book, which will be released worldwide on September 10, picks up more than 15 years after the literary classic’s ending.

It will be narrated by three women in living in the dystopian state of Gilead.

“Margaret Atwood is a literary icon who continues to delight and challenge readers through her provocative and compelling prose,” Steve Stark, president of television production of MGM said.

“She has been an incredible creative partner and resource to MGM throughout the production of Handmaid’s and we look forward to working with her on the story’s exciting new chapter.”

Craig Erwich, senior vice president of originals at US streaming platform Hulu, described Atwood as “one of the visionary stories of her generation.”

He added: “From her award-winning poetry, short stories and novels, Margaret has continually pushed boundaries and broken barriers to bring innovative stories to life.”

Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale debuted in April 2017 to considerable acclaim and was renewed for a fourth series this year.

The show has picked up eight Primetime Emmy Awards to date, including for Outstanding Drama Series, and has received the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Drama.

Lead actress Elisabeth Moss, who plays handmaid Offred, has received an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance.
